The American Red Cross responds to over 62,000 disasters every year. When disaster strikes our volunteers, partners and staff give immediate care and comfort by supplying shelter, distributing water and food, providing help securing replacement medications and eyeglasses, as well as offering spiritual and mental health consultations. We remain with our clients as long as needed and develop a recovery plan and help provide referral services. By far the largest disaster threat is home fires. Every day, on average seven people die in a home fire. Before today is over, Red Cross Volunteers will help 40 people in Georgia recover from a home fire, one-half of them will be children. In order to alleviate the needless suffering from a home fire, the American Red Cross implemented the Home Fire Campaign, aimed at reducing home fire death and injury by 25%. The Home Fire campaign addresses the problem in three program areas: * Installing smoke alarms in vulnerable, at-risk communities impacted by a home fire where death or injury has occurred. * Educating children about home fires through the Pillow Case project and Monster Guard App. * Teaching people to take action to save themselves, their families

Every two seconds, someone - a child, parent, grandparent, neighbor or friend-needs lifesaving blood. We rely on the selfless acts of our volunteer donors, who donate at blood drives held daily to meet the blood supply demand. To help ensure the safety of the supply, the Red Cross conducts more than a dozen rigorous tests on each unit of blood to establish type and screen for infectious diseases. Whole blood is then processed into different blood products, including red blood cells, platelets and plasma. Finally, these lifesaving bloods products are delivered to patients in hospitals and cancer treatment centers wherever and whenever they are needed. The American Red Cross supplies about 40% of the U.S. blood supply, and the 2nd largest blood processing center is a Red Cross facility located just outside of Atlanta in Douglasville, Georgia. We are also the largest contributor to the American Rare Donor Program, a program that helps match blood donor diversity with patient diversity. This match provides a positive impact on people suffering from diseases that are unique to their community.

The Red Cross supports active service men and women and their families and veterans by providing emergency communications, career assistance to family members and community resource support. The program is an integral part of military family life from the time the service member takes their oath of service through the day they return home as a veteran. The continuum of care supports them every step of the way working to: * Provide community information and referral services * Provide families with information to cope with military deployments * Help families understand and cope with disasters * Provide emergency communications * Support military hospital and clinic programs * Support veteran services and hospital programs * Provide re-connection workshops * Support military deployments with embedded staff on-the-ground

Sound the Alarm - Smoke Alarm Installers (No experience required)

Join the American Red Cross, Austell Fire and other partners to volunteer to install smoke alarms in Austell on Saturday, April 19th, 2020. Volunteers are trained on-site the morning of the install event. Just one day of your life can change someone else’s forever. Home fires claim seven lives every day but having working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death by half. That’s why the American Red Cross is rallying 27,000 volunteers to install 100,000 free smoke alarms nationwide during Sound the Alarm events, including Austell as one of the lead communities in Georgia. Thank you for your consideration.
