Program
Blood Donation
Every two seconds, someone - a child, parent, grandparent, neighbor or friend-needs lifesaving blood. We rely on the selfless acts of our volunteer donors, who donate at blood drives held daily to meet the blood supply demand. To help ensure the safety of the supply, the Red Cross conducts more than a dozen rigorous tests on each unit of blood to establish type and screen for infectious diseases. Whole blood is then processed into different blood products, including red blood cells, platelets and plasma. Finally, these lifesaving bloods products are delivered to patients in hospitals and cancer treatment centers wherever and whenever they are needed. The American Red Cross supplies about 40% of the U.S. blood supply, and the 2nd largest blood processing center is a Red Cross facility located just outside of Atlanta in Douglasville, Georgia. We are also the largest contributor to the American Rare Donor Program, a program that helps match blood donor diversity with patient diversity. This match provides a positive impact on people suffering from diseases that are unique to their community.
