Program

Connecting Students with STEM through Birds

Atlanta Audubon takes a holistic approach of preparing today's youth for the future they will inherit. One particular program that helps us reach school-aged children is Connecting Students with STEM through Birds, which works with one school for a full academic year to enhance bird-friendly habitat on school grounds, provide teacher training, deliver student programming, and support schoolwide learning with various curriculum and other resources. Each school selected as a Connecting Students with STEM through Birds partner school will work with Atlanta Audubon to build a bird-friendly outdoor classroom on school grounds. The outdoor classroom features native shrubs, grasses, trees and nesting boxes to attract birds for hands-on learning through multiple academic curriculums. Teachers at the school will also receive training from Atlanta Audubon staff on how to teach STEM content through the lens of birds and how to utilize the outdoor classroom with their own students. Additionally, Atlanta Audubon staff and naturalists will conduct programming at each partner school, which could include topics such as "Common Birds of Atlanta," "Mysteries of Migration," "Backyard Bird Habitat," or a hands-on bird banding demonstration. A classroom set of binoculars, copies of Atlanta Audubon's bilingual Learning About Birds curriculum, field guides, and fiction and nonfiction books focused on birds and nature round out the resources each school will receive.
