  • Organization Description:

Diana Hurst and Shamichael Traylor Co-Founded Loving Arms Cancer Outreach 8 years ago. As oncology nurses with a combined 35-plus years of experience in caring for cancer patients, they saw the tremendous need for ancillary services for patients that treatment teams of physicians did not supply. With a small staff and a tremendous volunteer force, Loving Arms is able to provide these life changing, life-saving services with minimal administrative costs, allowing the maximum of each dollar donated to be put to use for those facing cancer. Today the organization provides four key programs that help bridge the gap for individuals battling cancer in Cobb, Bartow, Cherokee, Douglas, Carroll, Paulding and Pickens Counties:

All Programs

Weekly support groups including group sharing opportunities, meditation, discussions on treatment options, supplemental community resources and guest speakers. Participants include those with cancer, caregivers and family members of those in treatment, survivors and even those that lost someone to cancer and want to contribute to supporting others. Participants do not pay for these therapeutic sessions nor the lunch. A plethora of community volunteers enhance the program with donated services such as massage, aromatherapy, food, transportation to the meetings and discounts to local businesses for the Loving Arms family.

We assist cancer patients who are struggling financially due to their diagnosis. Each day families that never dreamed they would seek the assistance of a charity come to us because cancer treatment has robbed them of their ability to work and they cannot pay utility bills, buy groceries or put gas in their car. Many are un/underinsured and cannot afford out of pocket treatment costs, medical products, prescriptions or durable medical goods. Loving Arms provides up to a value of $600 annually to each patient for their unique financial crisis. We coordinate payments to utility companies, landlords, bill collectors or pharmacies directly and also provide food and gas cards. Loving Arms has established a small but growing food pantry so those patients with empty stomachs and wallets can be fortified to be successful in their fight against cancer. We struggle often with a waiting list for support in the low-income communities we serve.

Our mission is to assist cancer patients financially and emotionally as they go through the cancer journey. The assistance we provide is in the form of support groups, gas cards, grocery cards, and utility assistance.
